Are We On Mars?

As you look around, you may not see, hear, or feel very earthly. Fires plague the west coast decimating people and property. Hurricanes ravage the southeast. Earthquakes rattle the northeast, and a drought destroys the plains.

While global warming forces planet Earth to self-destruct, people of color continue to be murdered in outrageous numbers throughout our land. Under that backdrop, our economy limps along like a one-armed ditch digger saddled with a pick and shovel mining for bitcoins.

So, what do we do? We buckle up. We defy performative activism. We band together and sustain one another.

I implore you to meditate, pray, or self-reflect – whichever relieves your anxieties. Then, engage in the uncomfortable conversations around diversity, equity, ageism, sexism, and inclusion. Make the seemingly unpopular decision and hire that Black-owned business. Work with your team and require excellence. Complacency cannot prevail. Let’s lean-in -- literally, and build a sustainable ecosystem that mitigates climate change, gets our youth back in school, gets our teams back to work, gives essential workers a break, gets our elected officials on one accord, diversifies our supply chains, and makes a meaningful difference in all of our lives.

Let’s collaborate and build a next-level society that makes us all feel good about where we are and better about where we are going. We are compassionate, intelligent, considerate, and caring people. We are not on Mars. We are on Earth. We can do this.

– Cheryl McCants, president & CEO
